Hello, ladies and gentlemen! Are your beautiful strands looking lifeless with every passing day? Do you want to bring the spark back in them? Who doesn’t want healthy shiny and silky hair! This eBook is perfect guide for you. Don’t worry, all the right remedies, tips and instructions are all in here. Hair is made up of keratin, a natural protein which nourishes the hair. It grows from follicle found in dermis. Yes, my dear readers, hair is a protein filament!

Hair falling like autumn leaves?

Yes my dears, this is the most common problem among all ages and genders! Hair fall due to numerous reasons listed below.

1. Stress

Stress can lead to hair breakage and fall. Telogen effluvium is the type of stress most likely linked to hair damage. This type of stress makes your follicles go dormant, so hair that’s in the middle of a growth cycle may break off. You might notice old hair fall out, too. Stress can also cause Alopecia areata, whereby body’s immune system causes immune cells to attack hair follicle and result in hair loss. Managing your stress may result in healthier hair. There are numerous ways to manage stress. Diet and exercise are very important. 20 to 40 minutes of daily physical activity relieves stress and boosts your confidence. You shall meditate. This calms your mind down. Talk it out! Yes, my dear readers, talk about what ever is bothering you to your friends and family or seek help of a professional. Lastly, push away negative thoughts and sleep well.

2.Dryness

Dehydrated hair is one of the precursors to damage and breakage. Our hair has three layers, the upper most hair is responsible for natural oil distribution in hair, make the light reflect and give gloss and shine to the strands. Dry hair could result from swimming too often in chlorinated swimming pools, washing your gorgeousness often. Anorexia Nervosa is an eating disorder which could result in malnutrition thus giving you dry and brittle hair. Take care of your eating schedules and habits. Visit a doctor if you are suffering from this disorder as it can be fatal. Breakage is also caused by various factors, including dry weather, low humidity, and too much heat. Be sure you use warm and not hot water when you wash your hair; hot water leads to further drying.

3. Diet

There’s a lot to the old saying, “you are what you eat,” especially when it comes to hair and skin health. Certain nutrients help your hair grow and stave off breakage from damage. Make sure you’re getting enough zinc, iron, and folic acid in your daily diet. Adequate protein and antioxidants (found in plant foods) can also keep your hair damage-free. Here are the five best vitamins for hair growth. Visit section “14 Healthy Foods for Hair Growth” for more knowledge.

4. Heat damage

One way to prevent overall heat damage is to give your strands a break from all styling tools at least once a week. To reduce the actual heat damage from your styling tools, select ceramic versions; these heat up more evenly, so you don’t have to repeatedly use them on the same sections of hair. It’s also essential to protect your hair before you apply the heat. Check out this heat-protecting spray to minimize damage. Visit “Stay Away from Straighteners and Curlers” section for more knowledge.

5. Over Processing

Perms, relaxers, professional straightening, and coloring can all make your hair seem like it’s healthier after the first session or two. But if you do these services too often, the cuticle can break down and cause hair damage. In the meantime, try a hair mask to extend your results, such as this color-protecting mask. Visit “Think Twice before you Visit the SALON” for more on this topic.

6. Over-washing

If you have oily skin, you’re also more likely to have excess sebum (natural oil) production in your scalp. This can lead to the temptation to wash your hair more often than you need to. While daily washes are useful if you have oily hair, you shouldn’t wash your hair multiple times per day. On the flip side, dehydrated hair may only need weekly shampooing. Also, be sure you shampoo gently at the scalp and apply conditioner smoothly from your ends to your roots. Visit “Washing to Brushing Guide” for more on this.

7. Improper towel drying

The towel’s rubbing on hair motion damages your hair when it’s most vulnerable (after being wet). Instead of rubbing water out of your hair, blot an absorbent towel around your hair instead. You can also leave a towel in your hair as a temporary measure to absorb excess water. Visit “Washing to Brushing Guide” for more on this.

8. Elastic hair ties

Elastic hair ties are must-haves for keeping your hair out of your face while working out. The problem with hair ties is they pull on your scalp and hair cuticle. You can fix this by wearing your hair down once in a while or making your up-do a bit looser, so it doesn’t pull on your hair so much. Also, make sure you’re wearing real hair ties and not just rubber bands that can damage your hair.

9. Incorrect brushing and combing

AAD recommends that you should only brush and comb when styling your hair. Make sure you used wide-tooth combs to prevent breakage. You should also only use a brush when your hair is dry and avoid using plastic bristles. Try a brush with natural bristles instead. Lack of hair trims It may seem like cutting your hair can damage it. Ironically though, hair trims help keep your hair healthy and free of split ends. You can think of a hair trim like you would ex foliation for skin — in both instances, you need to remove some of the old cells to help new ones grow. When you have split ends, these splits in the cuticle can travel up the rest of the length of your hair and lead to breakage. Visit “Washing to Brushing Guide” for more on this.

Stay Away from Electric Tools!

You are using all the wrong devices for your hair, so STOP. Straighteners and curlers do a lot of damage, you cannot even imagine. They are your enemies. You will be appalled. These tools when straightening or curling, change shape of hair by breaking down natural hydrogen bonds which in result strips our hair of natural oils and protein leaving them dead, easily, breakable, dry and brittle. Hair fall ensues to a great level if you use these devices regularly. However, you can lessen damage caused by them through following tips:

  • Apply a serum before you start curling or straightening. This will act as a coating and resistant against heat.
  • Turn down the temperature of your electronic devices.
  • Never use flat iron on wet hair. This results in bubble hair formation. Air is trapped as form of bubbles in hair thus resulting in hair dryness and breakage.
  • Restore elasticity of your hair. Use shampoos and conditioners or oils and hair masks twice a week to restore their natural health.
  • Limit the use of these devices. Yes, my dear readers, use them occasionally, otherwise go natural!
  • Change your hair devices once they get sticky and start sticking to your hair. They might have bacteria trapped in!
  • Lastly, instead of using flat iron, use blow dryer. It also gives you sleek straight look with less damage.

Think twice before you visit the SALON.

Sleek straight, rebonded and coloured hair are in fashion. We don’t stop you from going to the salon but consider alternative and less damaging options. I’ll provide you with a few tips and facts below.

  • People with naturally darker hair shall get darker balayage. Yes, people who have dark hair shall never go for complete color cut downs to get lighter shades. This results in hair aging. Hair dyes leave your hair dry and hair fall like autumn leaves! If you want to go for hair dyes, make sure to keep treating your beautiful cascades of hair with hair masks and love.
  • Instead of getting your hair rebounded, get keratin treatment. Rebounding is like murder of your beautiful strands. Hair become week from roots due to the excessive amount of heat used and the products used. Keratin treatment is a better option instead. It gives life to your brittle strands and gives you a sleek straight natural look. It lasts for about one year and you have to wash your hair with keratin shampoo, twice every week. Also, you will use blow dryer after every wash to keep the keratin in your hair for a longer time.
  • Some people wear extensions too often. Extensions add length and volume to hair but don’t use them regularly. The pins in them could make your roots weak and they are a nuisance to carry every day. Wear them on special occasions only.
  • Don’t apply hair sprays and gels regularly. They make your hair greasy and seal them, not letting wind touch your hair.

14 Foods that promote Hair Health

Eggs

Eggs are pioneer of hair growth. They contain all the essential hair growth nutrients such as zinc and selenium. They are protein power houses. Applying egg directly to scalp is a big yes yes! Next time, don’t forget to include an egg or two in your morning breakfast rituals.

Hair follicle inflammation is the root cause of hair fall. These supplements inhibit this inflammation. Omega-3 also prevents against sunlight damage.

In 2015 a three months study was conducted on women, including a control group which was not given the supplements. Every time women washed their hair, fallen strands were collected for all groups and counted. The ones who took supplements had surprisingly decreased hair fall as compared to control group (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25573272).

Oysters are rich sources of zinc, contain not too much and not too little zinc. Just the right amount! Taking too much zinc can lead to hair fall too.

Lack of zinc causes telogen effluvium, which causes hair loss. It occurs mostly after a traumatic event, current shock or stress. Poor diet, sudden weight loss, pregnancy, metal toxicity, surgery, menopause and certain drugs or drug reactions can also cause this. The hair starts falling from center of scalp. Zinc promotes hair growth and repairs your strands.

However, this logic needs more research. Still my dear readers, don’t keep waiting for more research, just go and grab some soybeans from the market!

Washing to brushing guide

The way you wash and brush your hair determines a lot about your hair texture and strength. I have provided a few tips:

  • Don’t wash everyday!
  • Wash only twice or thrice a week with ample clean water.
  • Don’t wash with hot water. Heat is an enemy to your hair.
  • Mix the shampoo with some water to dilute it. This will lessen the effect of chemicals used in shampoo.
  • Start shampooing closer to your neck, then bring the rest down to hair. Don’t apply direct shampoo to hair length. This turns hair brittle and dry
  • Massage your scalp with shampoo.
  • Always apply conditioner after shampooing as it turns your hair soft.
  • Don’t rub your hair with towel. This would lead to breakage. Instead press it gently against the towel with both hands.
  • Don’t keep your hair wrapped in towel for too long.
  • Let your hair air dry. Apply some serum.
  • Start brushing at the bottom of hair instead of starting at roots. Work your way up from bottom to prevent hair fall from force of brushing.
  • Brush in C motions, instead of brushing your hair straight down.

Hairstyle tips

I would be providing tips regarding many hairstyles, how they look and their benefits and demerits.

1. Loosen up!

Yes, my dears, let your hair loose. Tying them up most of the time leads to breakage. Loosened up hair also give you younger look.

2. Remove that pony tail!

Pony tails do look pretty but when you wear them most of the time, you are in for hair damage. Your hair line on your forehead starts to diminish. The hair at center of your head start weakening due to pressure of being tied up most of the time. Your roots become weak and hair fall off.

3. Braid up Cinderella.

Have you ever wondered why all those fairy tale characters and movie characters had their hair braided for most of the time and let loose on special occasions? Braids are so good for your hair. Ask your elders! Braiding up hair helps them grow longer. They don’t break and are neatly tied away. There is less chance of getting lice in them too. Braids don’t even add any pressure to your scalp. There are a lot many sorts of braids out there, ranging from simple braids to French tails, Dutch tails and fish tails. Play with all those styles. They look so beautiful too.

4. Avoid Hair Buns

Yes, hair buns are a good way to keep hair out of your face and away from your neck. However, having your hair tied up in buns all the time gives your hair too many twists and knots. They become frizzy and again you have to clip up your hair closer to your scalp and hair can become weak due to clip’s pressure.

What are those tini tiny creatures in your head?

Jeez! Do you feel itchiness in your hair? This could be caused by lice! Letting these creatures roam around in your head is a big no no. Lice live on blood of your scalp. You will often find them sticked closer to your scalp mostly behind ears or closer to your neck area. Lice lay eggs regularly. They mostly enter hair not much longer or much shorter. Getting lice has nothing to do with hair hygiene. In fact, they prefer living in clean hair.

How to get rid of them?

  • Hair dryers are their enemies. People who blow dry their hair regularly have minimal chances of getting lice. Moreover, blow dryer causes less damage than a straightener.
  • Tie your hair in a braid, bun or a pony tail. Tying up your hair reduces chance of getting lice.
  • Get a haircut.
  • Apply lice lotion twice or thrice to fully get rid of them. After applying lotion, hunt them out next day, as by then they would have become feeble to crawl.
  • Get a chemical treatment like hair dying or keratin. Chemical treatments are poison for these creatures.
